Before the Erdtree took its current shape, the order it ruled was called the Crucible. In the Crucible, all life was one. A man might wear horns, a tail, feathers, the body of a beast, and these were not curses but blessings, marks of the primordial undivided origin. The Crucible Knights who served Godfrey are the canon's last warriors of that older theology. Their golden tail-and-horn aspects are the same kind of power Godrick now grafts onto himself by force ; the difference is that for the knights it was a gift, for Godrick it is a theft.

'Crucible Aspects: Wings, Horns, Tail, Bloom, Thorns. The crucible was the primordial form of the Erdtree, in which all forms of life were intermingled and the bounds of plant, beast and human had not yet hardened.' The Greater Will's purification of the Crucible was the Order's founding crime. Horns became the mark of demons, the Misbegotten and the Omen ; tails became dragon vestiges ; the bloom became scarlet rot when corrupted by the Outer God. Marika is herself, secretly, of Crucible descent : she conceals horns under her crown. The DLC's Hornsent civilization is what was left of the Crucible's people after she had her son Messmer slaughter them. The Crucible was paradise. The Order replaced it with hierarchy.
