The Opening Prophecy
Elden Ring begins with a voice. Before the Tarnished takes a single step, a narrator recites the history of the world, and the game's text preserves not one prologue but several: the opening cinematic, an early cut with different names, a version that names five demigods, another told as a survivor's memory, and one spoken as a promise before the disaster itself. All of them address the same figure: 'Tarnished warrior, spurned by the grace of gold. Seek that which hath been lost to thee. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between.' Read side by side, these narrations form a table of contents for everything that follows, every proper noun the voice utters opens a chapter of this codex.
The opening cinematic begins as a chronicle compressed into eight sentences. 'The great Elden Ring was shattered', the wound at the center of the world. 'Queen Marika the Eternal is nowhere to be found', the god has vanished. 'In the Night of the Black Knives, Godwyn the Golden was first to perish', a murder, the first death of a demigod, committed before the story begins. Then the succession: Marika's offspring, 'demigods all', claimed the shards of the broken Ring, and 'the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered the Shattering', a war 'from which no lord arose', ending in 'abandonment by the Greater Will'. In under a minute the player has been told of an assassination, a civil war, an absent queen and a heaven that no longer answers. The game spends the next hundred hours letting the Tarnished discover what each of those sentences was hiding.
A second narration preserved in the same files names the heirs. 'Godrick, the feeble. Malenia, decayed from birth. General Radahn, slayer of giants. Rykard, the tyrannical serpent. And Morgott, Prince of the Omen.' The demigods are introduced not by their titles of glory but by their flaws, feebleness, decay, tyranny, the Omen curse, as if the narrator were already writing their epitaphs; each names a boss the Tarnished must eventually face. Twice, the voice admits what it does not know: 'Shattered, by someone, or something. Fractured, by someone, or something.' The intro plants the game's central mystery and refuses to solve it, the answer waits, many hours away, in Ranni's own confession about the Night of the Black Knives. And it is the Two Fingers, this version states, who 'call upon ye, the Tarnished'.
Then the prophecy turns to a roll-call. 'Arise now, ye Tarnished. Ye dead, who yet live. The call of long-lost grace speaks to us all.' Five champions are summoned by name, Hoarah Loux, chieftain of the badlands; the ever-brilliant Goldmask; Fia, the Deathbed Companion; the loathsome Dung Eater; and Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-knowing, every one a rival the player will meet at the Roundtable Hold, on the road, or at the very foot of the throne. And then the coda: 'And one other. Whom grace would again bless. A Tarnished of no renown.' The player is written into the prophecy as its final, anonymous clause, the only champion the narration cannot describe, because the game has not yet been played.
The variants betray the text's own drafting. An early cut of the opening spells the champions differently, 'Hoarah Roux, the Gold Mask', 'Lady Yuliya, the Deathbed Companion', 'Sir Gideon Orphnier', ghost names that the official French subtitles quietly normalize into Hoarah Loux, Dame Fia and Gideon Ofnir; and where the final version commands the Tarnished to seek the Ring, this one ends on ownership: 'Face the Elden Ring. And reclaim what was thine.' Another telling reframes the whole prologue as a survivor's memory, 'It happened an age ago. But when I recall, I see it true', states outright what the cinematic withholds ('The Rune of Death was stolen'), names 'the conqueror of the stars, General Radahn' and 'Malenia the Severed' as the mightiest to remain, and closes by handing the crown to the listener: 'Awaiting the arrival of the Elden Lord. Unless of course, thou shouldst take the crown?'
One narration stands apart, because it is spoken before the disaster. 'Brave Tarnished. Mighty warriors, who fought at my side. Await the summons. It will call to thee one day. Heed the fading grace. Listen to the Fingers... Be ready, once it is shattered.' Whoever speaks these lines addresses the exiled Tarnished as former comrades-in-arms, and already knows the Elden Ring will break, in this telling the Shattering is not an accident but an appointment. The speaker is never named; 'fought at my side' fits Godfrey, the first Elden Lord, stripped of grace and exiled with his warriors, a reading, not a certainty, resting on that single possessive. If it holds, the entire game is the keeping of that old promise: 'Become Lord. Enact thy will!'
Elden Ring, O, Elden Ring. Shaper of life, arbiter of fate. Lord of the very stars above. Tarnished warrior, spurned by the grace of gold. Seek that which hath been lost to thee. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. Seek the Elden Ring!
The fallen leaves tell a story. The great Elden Ring was shattered. In our home, across the fog, the Lands Between. Now, Queen Marika the Eternal is nowhere to be found, and in the Night of the Black Knives, Godwyn the Golden was first to perish. Soon, Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring. The mad taint of their newfound strength triggered the Shattering. A war from which no lord arose. A war leading to abandonment by the Greater Will.
Elden Ring, O Elden Ring. Its gold commanded the very stars, giving life its fullest brilliance. Shattered, by someone, or something. Fractured, by someone, or something. Godrick, the feeble. Malenia, decayed from birth. General Radahn, slayer of giants. Rykard, the tyrannical serpent. And Morgott, Prince of the Omen. Each, inheriting their own shard, played a part in the Shattering, ║ a war with no end, and no victor. And so the Two Fingers call upon ye, the Tarnished. To cross the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. To seek the Elden Ring. Seek the Elden Ring.
Arise now, ye Tarnished. Ye dead, who yet live. The call of long-lost grace speaks to us all. Hoarah Loux, chieftain of the badlands. The ever-brilliant Goldmask. Fia, the Deathbed Companion. The loathsome Dung Eater. And Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-knowing. ║ And one other. Whom grace would again bless. A Tarnished of no renown. Cross the fog, to the Lands Between. to stand before the Elden Ring. And become the Elden Lord.
Long ago, ye Tarnished lost something most dear. The Elden Ring. O Elden Ring. Its gold commanded the very stars, giving life its fullest brilliance. Though shattered, it yet guides thy kin. Though fractured, it yet guides thy kin. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. Hoarah Roux, the Gold Mask. Lady Yuliya, the Deathbed Companion. The hideous Dung Eater. And Sir Gideon Orphnier, the All-knowing. ║ Each coveteth the Elden Ring. But their ambitions are yet unmet. Surely thou hast thine own design? Then implore the Two Fingers, for guidance. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. To face the Elden Ring. To stand before the Elden Ring. Face the Elden Ring. And reclaim what was thine.
It happened an age ago. But when I recall, I see it true. On a night of wint'ry fog. The Rune of Death was stolen, And the demigods began to fall, starting with Godwyn the Golden. Queen Marika was driven to the brink. The Elden Ring was broken, triggering the Shattering, an internecine war between demigods. The conqueror of the stars, General Radahn. And the Blade of Miquella, Malenia the Severed. ║ These two were the mightiest to remain, and locked horns in combat. But there would be no victor. And so, we inhabit a fractured world. Awaiting the arrival of the Elden Lord. Unless of course, thou shouldst take the crown?
Brave Tarnished. Mighty warriors, who fought at my side. Await the summons. It will call to thee one day. Heed the fading grace. Listen to the Fingers. Gold commandeth the very stars, giving life its fullest brilliance. Elden Ring, O, Elden Ring. Be ready, once it is shattered. Seek the Elden Ring, O Tarnished. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. Become Lord. Enact thy will! ║ Seek the Elden Ring!
