The Origin of the Maddening Flame

Shabriri, the buried caravan, and the eyes that wept yellow fire

'Incantation originating from the maddening Three Fingers. Releases a maddening shriek that causes madness buildup in foes nearby. … It is said that the sickness of the flame of frenzy began with Shabriri, the most reviled man in all history.' The Howl of Shabriri states the origin claim outright: the sickness of the yellow flame began with a man named Shabriri. Shabriri's Woe writes down his crime and his sentence: 'his eyes gouged out as punishment for the crime of slander, and, with time, the blight of the flame of frenzy came to dwell in the empty sockets.' The Tarnished encounters him as a possessing spirit who climbs into the corpse of a dead hunter of Bloody Fingers called Yura; of that man, Shabriri says 'For he is dead', and 'As for his flesh, he gave it to me, Shabriri.'

'In times past, every single person who attempted to control the flame of frenzy succumbed to madness after a desperate internal struggle. This incantation is testament to a meager victory.' The Frenzied Burst description names the cost. Madness, in this world, is not chaos for chaos's sake: it is a counter-Order, summoned by the Great Caravan after their clan 'was rounded up and buried alive far underground' for heresy and 'chanted a curse of despair'. Shabriri's part is to speak that curse as an invitation: 'Burn the Erdtree to the ground, and incinerate all that divides and distinguishes.' Hyetta, the blind maiden guided toward the distant light, comes to say it in her own voice, 'Melt it all away, with the yellow chaos flame' ; Vyke, knight of the Roundtable Hold, 'traveled far below the capital, and was scorched by the flame of frenzy' ; Midra, master of the manse, asks for 'a frenzied flame to melt away the curses, suffering, and despair. And the Order, entire.' Where the Greater Will gave the Erdtree, the Three Fingers offer that burning, and Melina names its price: 'It is chaos, devouring life and thought unending.'
